VanGo! Museum on Wheels

Developed in 1992 as a response to the needs of a rural student population with limited exposure to museum-quality arts and crafts, the VanGo! Museum on Wheels has since grown into a valuable resource for the Central Pennsylvania region. The program is intended to give students and community members an authentic art museum experience which reinforces existing curriculum and standards, while also encouraging deeper relationships with cultural objects. The current VanGo! Museum on Wheels is a 31-foot Winnebago Sightseer retrofitted with a gallery space. Visits include tours aboard the bus, group assemblies, and a group interactive. Exhibitions rotate on an annual basis.

Current Exhibition

Special FX features over a dozen works by artists Amber Heaton, Luke Murphy, and Brian Wiggins which explore pattern, optical illusion, and the art of dazzlement. Beginning in March 2019, this exhibition will travel to schools and events throughout the region onboard the VanGo! Museum on Wheels.

The physical sensation of viewing pattern and optical illusion can be pleasurable, overwhelming, or even a tad painful. The feeling is even more intense when we see overlapping or interrupted optical illusions or patterns. Our eyes as viewers become overwhelmed, or dazzled. In Special FX, visitors are confronted not only by optical illusions and pattern, but by unique mixtures and disruptions of the two which cause an especially intense effect known as dazzle.

Scheduling

Visits include tours onboard the VanGo, group assemblies, and a hands-on activity. Exhibitions rotate on an annual basis.

The VanGo! can accommodate up to 15 visitors per tour group and up to 200 visitors in a single day (6 hours). We recommend that each tour group spends at least 15 minutes in the exhibition. The morning assembly is approximately 20 minutes and requires a screen and projector. After the assembly, classrooms attend the VanGo in halves. One half joins a docent onboard the VanGo, while the other half completes a hands-on activity inside the school. Halfway through their session, the halves switch.
